United States Student Visa: Step by Step
Application Steps
- University Admission + I-20An acceptance letter (Form I-20) arrives from a SEVP-approved school. The form states the school + programme + financial capacity details; it is mandatory for the application.
- SEVIS I-901 PaymentThe SEVIS I-901 fee of $350 is paid via fmjfee.com. The payment receipt is requested at the consulate appointment; it can be paid after the I-20 is received.
- DS-160 + Consulate AppointmentThe DS-160 visa application form is completed at ceac.state.gov. An appointment is booked at the U.S. Embassy (Ankara) or Consulate (Δ°stanbul, Adana); the visa fee is $185 (CGI Δ°stanbul).
- Visa InterviewIn TΓΌrkiye the interview lasts 2-5 minutes on average. Questions: choice of programme, funding, ties to TΓΌrkiye, plans after graduation. Financial capacity: prove the amount stated on the I-20 (usually $40-80K/year) with a bank statement.
- Entry to the U.S. + I-94Entry to the U.S. max 30 days before the programme start. The CBP officer creates the electronic I-94 record (D/S = duration of status). SEVIS becomes active once you register at the school with the I-20.
