When it opened in 1972, its 5,667 students made it the American university with the most enrolled students on its opening day. Florida International University has two main campuses, Modesto Maidique and Biscayne Bay, plus additional centers at various points throughout Miami. The main campus, Modesto Maidique (MMC), sits in downtown Miami on about 1,400 acres of the former Tamiami Airport site. It houses the College of Engineering and Computing, which spans about 145,000 square meters, and the Motorola Nanofabrication Research Facility. Administrative offices and buildings for nearly all of the university's departments are here as well.
You will also find student residence halls, FIU Stadium, the FIU Arena, FIU Baseball Stadium, and fitness centers for student use. The university's shuttle service handles transportation within and between campuses. The Biscayne Bay campus covers about 800 acres along the oceanfront. It is home to some of the university's most popular departments, including Marine Sciences, Journalism, and Media.
Florida International University offers undergraduate and graduate students a range of housing options through 9 residence halls across both campuses. The halls sit within secure campuses, are fully equipped to meet every student need, and offer both single and shared rooms. Students at the Bayview residential complex on the Biscayne Bay campus enjoy an oceanfront setting, with a pool and numerous common areas. Beyond academic life, you can also join one of many student clubs and develop yourself culturally.
Options include the International Student Club, Model UN, the Science Club, and the Astronomy Club. These groups make for a richer social academic experience. More than 30 restaurants and cafés are open to you on campus. The campus's central location also puts many cafés, restaurants, and entertainment venues in the surrounding area within easy reach. Students are well looked after.
