Stony Brook University (SUNY)

Stony Brook University (SUNY — State University of New York System) is a research-focused public university. It sits in the Stony Brook hamlet of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York. The university began in 1957 as a college whose mission was to train middle school mathematics and science teachers. It has widened its academic offerings ever since and grown into a major research and educational institution.

As part of the State University of New York System, Stony Brook is one of the largest higher education institutions on Long Island, with more than 25,000 students and over 2,600 faculty members. The university offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. These cover fields such as engineering, business, education, health sciences, social sciences, humanities, and fine arts. Stony Brook is known in particular for its research programs in medicine, computer science, and engineering. The university hosts numerous research centers and institutes.

These include the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, the Institute for Advanced Computational Science, and the Center for Communicating Science.
