Founded by Thomas Jefferson — one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and its third president — the University of Virginia is one of the finest and most selective academic institutions in the country when it comes to student admissions. 

The University of Virginia's founding board of visitors consisted of the third, fourth, and fifth presidents of the United States, respectively. The University of Virginia's main campus, also known as “The Grounds,” is situated between the city of Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Charlottesville and the university campus are conveniently located two hours south of the nation's capital and just over an hour east of Richmond, VA. The famous Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway are only 30 minutes from the university campus. The campus is home to numerous facilities serving students.

The university provides housing for students in their first year, with McCormick Road Residence Halls and Alderman Road Residence Halls reserved exclusively for first-year students. The University of Virginia has one of the largest library collections among university libraries in the United States, with approximately 1.7 million volumes.

Campus Life

The university campus features numerous resources available to students, including sports complexes and fitness centers, a university library, a health center, a student life center, and a student activities center. Springfest, held annually each spring by the University Programs Council, is one of the largest festivals in the state and hosts major concerts, performances, and a wide range of activities. In addition, Charlottesville, located in central Virginia, is one of the best college towns in the country, offering students a wealth of social and cultural opportunities.

In particular, Monticello (Thomas Jefferson's home), Carter Mountain Orchard, James Monroe's Highland, the Saunders-Monticello Trail, and the Jefferson Vineyards are among the must-see attractions in Charlottesville.
