The University of Rochester began in 1850 and is a selective, research-focused private university in the city of Rochester, New York. The university held its first classes in the former United States Hotel on Buffalo Street, and in 1930 it moved to its current River Campus, on the banks of the Genesee River. Over time it has grown to include a number of schools and colleges.
Among them are the School of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering; the Eastman School of Music; the School of Medicine and Dentistry, founded in 1920; the School of Nursing; the Simon Business School; and the Warner School of Education. The Eastman School of Music was founded in 1921 with significant support from George Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak Company. The university is known for its contributions to research and education.
Its Institute of Optics, founded in 1929, was the first institution in the country to offer a degree program in optical science and engineering. The Laboratory for Laser Energetics, founded in 1970, is home to some of the world's most powerful laser systems.

How to get into University of Rochester

The University of Rochester runs several distinct campuses, each dedicated to specific academic and research activities. The main River Campus lies about two miles south of downtown Rochester, along the Genesee River. It spans 154 acres and serves as the primary academic hub.
This campus is home to the School of Arts and Sciences, the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Simon Business School, and the Warner School of Education and Human Development. The River Campus is known for its vibrant student life, with more than 250 student-run clubs, comprehensive sports facilities, and numerous events.
Next to it stands the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), a leading center for medical education, research, and patient care. URMC takes in the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the School of Nursing, Strong Memorial Hospital, Golisano Children's Hospital, the Wilmot Cancer Institute, and the Eastman Institute for Oral Health. The Eastman School of Music sits in Rochester's East End cultural district. It was founded in 1921 with the support of George Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak Company.
This campus holds the renowned Eastman Theatre, now known as Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, and the Sibley Music Library, the largest academic music library in North America. Student housing here is in the Student Living Center. The South Campus, in Brighton, is home to the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, a national laboratory funded by the Department of Energy, as well as the Larry and Cindy Bloch Alumni and Advancement Center.
The University of Rochester offers a vibrant student life, with more than 250 student-run organizations. These include club sports teams, performing arts groups, academic and professional societies, and cultural and community engagement groups. Campus Community Connection (CCC) serves as a hub for these organizations, supporting student involvement and leadership development. The university is home to beloved a cappella groups such as the nationally recognized Midnight Ramblers.
The club sports program is also one of the most active in the country, offering students the opportunity to take part in a wide range of sporting activities, whether for competition or recreation. Traditions and annual events play an important role in building school spirit and community at the university. Meliora Weekend, established in 2001, brings alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, and friends together for a weekend of events each fall. It combines alumni reunion, family weekend, and homecoming activities.
Another cherished tradition is the Boar's Head Dinner, an annual medieval-themed banquet. It began in 1934 and remains one of the most significant events of the academic year.
