Auburn University at Montgomery

Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) is in Montgomery, Alabama, close to the junction of Taylor Road and I-85. The campus covers about 500 acres, a site chosen for its good soil conditions and its easy access to Interstate 85. The site was picked through a careful process that weighed several locations in Montgomery. The campus history is closely tied to the work of local and state officials who wanted higher education to grow in Montgomery. Their project set out to offer competitive undergraduate programs, adult education, and graduate programs in many disciplines.

It met early legal obstacles tied to racial segregation. The initiative still moved forward by acquiring a property on Bell Street and then constructing the campus.

Early development brought buildings for libraries, classrooms, faculty, and administrative offices. From the start there was also provision for sports, student housing, and student activities. In the first academic year on the new site, 1,543 students enrolled. AUM has kept expanding its physical facilities ever since. The Student Center, now called the Watson Robbins Taylor Center, was built in 1972, and the physical education complex was finished in 1976. That complex brought together mixed-use spaces, including classrooms, sports courts, and recreation areas.

Tennis courts and playing grounds were built between 1972 and 1976. Student housing grew with new buildings in 1979, 2003, and 2013.

AUM has also set up service programs for the Montgomery area, including continuing education, health clinics, and community services. This outreach has strengthened its relationship with the local community. Athletics have done much to improve campus life at AUM. The university has a strong record of taking part and succeeding in sport, mainly in the NAIA, and later moved to the NCAA. In 2011 the institution changed its mascot from the Senators to the Warhawks in order to honor Montgomery's aviation legacy, in particular the Curtiss P-40 fighter jet used during World War II.

AUM provides a diverse range of events and services to students, which makes campus life lively and open to everyone.
