Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) is situated in Montgomery, Alabama, in close proximity to the junction of Taylor Road and I-85. The campus has an area of approximately 500 acres, which was selected based on the advantageous soil conditions and its close access to Interstate 85. The selection of this place was determined through a rigorous procedure that entailed evaluating various sites in Montgomery. The history of AUM's campus is closely connected with the endeavors of local and state officials who had a vision of developing higher education in Montgomery. The goal of the project was to offer competitive undergraduate programs, adult education opportunities, and graduate programs in many disciplines. Although it encountered initial legal obstacles related to racial segregation, the initiative advanced by acquiring a property on Bell Street and subsequently constructing the campus.

The early campus development encompassed the construction of buildings dedicated to holding libraries, classrooms, faculty, and administrative offices. In the initial stages, there were also provisions for sports, student accommodation, and student engagement. During the inaugural academic year on the new site, a total of 1,543 students enrolled. Over the course of its existence, AUM has consistently grown its physical infrastructure. The construction of the Student Center, currently referred to as the Watson Robbins Taylor Center, took place in 1972, while the physical education complex was finished in 1976. This complex comprised versatile amenities, encompassing classrooms, sporting courts, and recreational places. Tennis courts and playing grounds were constructed between the years 1972 and 1976. The student housing was enlarged with the construction of new structures in the years 1979, 2003, and 2013.

AUM has also been engaged in the establishment of service programs for the Montgomery area, encompassing continuing education, health clinics, and community services. This outreach program has enhanced its rapport with the local community. Athletics have greatly improved campus life at AUM.
