UMass Amherst is situated on 586 hectares of land, most of which lies within the town of Amherst, with a smaller portion extending into the neighboring town of Hadley. The university campus stretches approximately 2 kilometers in every direction from its center, with academic buildings and research laboratories in the innermost ring, surrounded by university-owned apartment complexes and student residence halls. Moving outward, successive rings contain the university's athletic facilities and smaller administrative buildings. One of the buildings housing the university library stands 90 meters tall at 26 stories, making it one of the tallest academic research libraries in the world. In addition, UMass Amherst is home to more than 14,000 students across 52 residence hall buildings located on campus.

Campus Life

The campus is home to numerous venues for both performing and visual arts, with many theatre, music, and dance performances taking place throughout the year. The most notable of these venues, the Fine Arts Center (FAC), houses the university's contemporary arts museum and hosts visual art exhibitions and workshops year-round. More than 200 student clubs and societies covering virtually every interest are active within the university, and the student union frequently organizes events that bring students together. In addition, the Emily Dickinson Museum, the Amherst College Museum of Natural History, the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, the Mead Art Museum, Mount Holyoke Range State Park, Puffer's Pond, and the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail are among the must-visit destinations in Amherst.
