The University of Utah is a research-focused public university located in Salt Lake City, the capital of the state of Utah in the United States. Founded in 1850 as the University of Deseret under the provisional State of Deseret, it is the oldest institution of higher education in Utah and the flagship institution of the Utah System of Higher Education. Take a closer look at University of Utah

The University of Utah campus is situated at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains and covers approximately 620 hectares, divided into four areas: the historic lower campus, the upper campus, the research park, and the medical campus. The historic lower campus is where the university was originally founded and contains some of the oldest and most iconic structures on campus — including Park Building, the oldest building on campus, and Rice-Eccles Stadium, home to the university's football team.

The upper campus is where the majority of academic and administrative buildings are located, along with a large portion of the university's research facilities. It ranges from historic structures — such as the beautiful Gothic-style buildings of the College of Mines and Earth Sciences — to modern facilities like the state-of-the-art Carolyn and Kem Gardner Commons building.

The research park is a separate area located just south of the main campus and is home to a number of research centers and technology companies, including the University of Utah Research Foundation, the Utah Science Technology and Research (USTAR) initiative, and numerous private companies. The medical campus is located approximately 5 kilometers from the main campus in Salt Lake City's Medical District and is home to the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, including the School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, and College of Pharmacy.

Campus Life

The University of Utah has a vibrant campus life. The university offers students a range of housing options, including traditional residence halls, apartment-style accommodations, and family housing. Themed living communities that bring together students with shared interests are also available. The University of Utah has more than 600 student clubs and organizations covering a wide variety of interests — from academic clubs to cultural groups and service organizations. The University of Utah is a member of the Pac-12 Conference and has a strong athletics profile with 17 varsity sports teams.

Students can attend games and competitions free of charge with their student ID, and the university also offers club sports exclusively for members. In addition, the state of Utah is known for its vast and scenic open spaces, and through them the University of Utah organizes a wide variety of year-round outdoor recreational activities for its students. The university's Outdoor Recreation Program offers trips and rental equipment for activities such as hiking, skiing, and canoeing.

The University of Utah also hosts a variety of events and activities throughout the year, including concerts, lectures, and film screenings. Campus traditions include Commencement, Convocation, and the Redfest music festival, among others.
