CU Boulder's main campus is located in the city of Boulder, south of the Pearl Street Mall and east of the Chautauqua Conference Center. The campus consists primarily of academic buildings, student residence halls, and research facilities. The section known as East Campus is located only about 400 meters from the main campus. CU Boulder's campus is recognized as one of the most beautiful university campuses in the United States, and the city of Boulder was named the number one college town in the country by the American Institute for Economic Research in 2017.
Like many other universities in the United States, CU Boulder offers students a highly active and vibrant campus life. At the heart of campus life are the residence halls, and both first-year students and upperclassmen can choose from one of 24 different residence halls located on campus or just off campus. The residence halls offer 17 different room types, ranging from single rooms to four-person rooms and apartment-style accommodations. Various residential communities are located across the main campus and in a separate area called Williams Village, situated approximately 2.4 km from the main campus. A free shuttle service runs between Williams Village and the main campus in both directions. Norlin Library offers students spacious study areas, while the Community Center — also known by students as C4C — houses Student Services offices such as Campus Card Services, Disability Services, and Career Services. C4C also serves as a comprehensive campus dining hall, home to 10 micro-restaurants offering cuisine from around the world. The university's renowned recreation center features basketball and volleyball courts, the only ice skating rink in Boulder, a lap pool, a diving pool, fitness studios (cycling, rowing, etc.), a climbing wall, a grass gymnasium, and an iconic outdoor pool shaped like the CU Boulder buffalo mascot. Performances are held year-round at the university's performing arts facilities, and the student union frequently organizes various activities on campus.
