The university has proven itself in athletics as well, with 95 Olympic medals to its name. The Bloomington Campus covers about 8 square kilometers. It extends from the heart of downtown Bloomington northward and northeastward to E Indiana Avenue. The campus has wide green spaces, along with historic buildings left from the university's reconstruction in the late nineteenth century. Its buildings spread out from 3rd Street in the downtown area, running north, east, northeast, and northwest. The famous Dunn's Woods, Dunn Meadow, and the Bloomington Botanical Garden form the green areas at the downtown end of campus.
The university's athletic complex and sports fields sit at the northeastern end. You can get around campus on foot, by bicycle, or on the university's shuttle service.
With an exceptionally large campus and student population, the university is home to more than 700 student organizations and clubs. The student body is highly active, and, like many other higher education institutions in the United States, the university is known for its student traditions. Sports play a major role on campus. Activities such as cycling races, competitions in which the university's sports teams compete, and dance contests are among the events that draw the participation of the student community. The student union organizes numerous activities throughout the year.
With the contributions of the Jacobs School of Music, more than 1,000 live music performances take place on campus each year. The campus also holds 4 museums and art galleries. In the city of Bloomington, must-see destinations include Oliver Winery, WonderLab, and the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center. Lake Monroe, the Eskenazi Museum of Art, and the Buskirk-Chumley Theater are also among them.
