Originally opened in 1820 as a seminary, the institution was reorganized as a university college under the name Indiana College in 1829 and elevated to university status in 1838. Campus

The Bloomington Campus, covering approximately 8 square kilometers, extends from the heart of downtown Bloomington northward and northeastward to E Indiana Avenue. The campus features expansive green spaces as well as historic buildings that remain from the university's reconstruction in the late nineteenth century. The university's buildings spread out from 3rd Street in the downtown area in the north, east, northeast, and northwest directions. The famous Dunn's Woods, Dunn Meadow, and the Bloomington Botanical Garden make up the green areas at the downtown end of campus, while the university's athletic complex and sports fields are located at the northeastern end of campus. Getting around campus is possible on foot, by bicycle, or via the university's shuttle service.

Campus Life

With an exceptionally large campus and student population, the university is home to more than 700 student organizations and clubs. The university has a highly active student body and, like many other higher education institutions in the United States, is known for its student traditions. Sports play a major role on campus, and activities such as cycling races, competitions in which the university's sports teams compete, and dance contests are among the events that draw the participation of the student community. The student union organizes numerous activities throughout the year, and with the contributions of the Jacobs School of Music, more than 1,000 live music performances take place on campus annually. In addition to 4 museums and art galleries on campus, Oliver Winery, WonderLab, the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center, Lake Monroe, the Eskenazi Museum of Art, and the Buskirk-Chumley Theater are among the must-see destinations in the city of Bloomington.
