UMass Boston overview

The University of Massachusetts, or UMass Boston, is a research-focused public university that began its educational life in 1852 under the name Boston State College and took its current name in 1964. Thanks to its large international student population, it is one of the 20 most culturally diverse universities in America. UMass Boston offers undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs, and features 8 colleges and more than 100 undergraduate and graduate departments, with a focus on Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics, Nursing, and Health Sciences. In addition, UMass Boston is home to more than 50 interdisciplinary research centers and institutes, including the pioneering Center for Personalized Cancer Therapy. UMass Boston currently serves more than 15,000 students, including students from 136 different countries. Furthermore, inspired by the lighthouse that appears in the school's official logo, the school's students and student clubs are referred to as "Beacons."

How to get into UMass Boston

UMass Boston offers a preparatory program called the “English Language Program” to prepare students entering their first year of university for higher education and to help them develop language proficiency.

Prospective international students who wish to apply to undergraduate programs offered by UMass Boston must fulfill the admission requirements listed below.

  • Completion of 12 Years of Basic Education
  • 4-Year High School Diploma
  • High GPA
  • Official transcripts listing the courses taken and grades received by the prospective student during high school
  • SAT or ACT Exam Score
  • English Proficiency Certificate
    • English proficiency certificate obtained through proficiency exams such as IELTS and TOEFL iBT
  • Personal Statement & Essay

Academic qualifications obtained through programs such as GCE A-Level, International Baccalaureate, and Advanced Placement are not sufficient for direct admission; however, students enrolled in these programs may request course credit for the courses they have completed.

Campus

Take a closer look at UMass Boston

UMass Boston is located in Boston, the capital and largest city of the state of Massachusetts. Situated on a peninsula called Columbia Point along the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, the university's central campus — known as the Campus Center — houses all of the university's schools and academic units. UMass Boston's main campus is also approximately 5 to 10 minutes from the airport by public transit or private vehicle. The central campus, which is easily accessible from downtown by foot, bicycle, or public transit, features a waterfront walking path along the ocean, sports facilities, and student dormitories.

 

 

Campus Life

UMass Boston's main campus has shared dining halls, various cafes and restaurants to meet students' dining needs. Students can also take advantage of nearby shopping centers and dining establishments thanks to their proximity to downtown. Inside the UMass Boston Campus Center, there are dormitories where students can meet all their needs and choose from different room types. Students living in the dorms can also take advantage of the dorm dining halls. UMass Boston has more than 150 student clubs that work to strengthen academic life and cultural interaction. Examples of these student clubs include the Anthropology Club, the Art Club, the Chess Club, and the Social Welfare Club.
