UMass Boston overview

The University of Massachusetts, or UMass Boston, is a research-focused public university. It opened in 1852 as Boston State College and took its current name in 1964. Its large international student population makes it one of the 20 most culturally diverse universities in America. You can study here at the undergraduate, master's, or doctoral level. The university has 8 colleges and more than 100 undergraduate and graduate departments. Its focus lies on Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics, Nursing, and Health Sciences.

Campus

Take a closer look at UMass Boston

UMass Boston is in Boston, the capital and largest city of the state of Massachusetts. The university sits on a peninsula called Columbia Point, on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. Its central campus, known as the Campus Center, houses all of the university's schools and academic units. From the main campus, the airport is about 5 to 10 minutes away by public transit or private vehicle. You can reach the central campus from downtown on foot, by bicycle, or by public transit. There you will find a waterfront walking path along the ocean, sports facilities, and student dormitories.

Campus Life

The main campus has shared dining halls, plus various cafes and restaurants for students' dining needs. Downtown is close by, so you can also use nearby shopping centers and dining establishments. Inside the UMass Boston Campus Center are dormitories where you can meet all your needs and choose from different room types. If you live in the dorms, you can also eat in the dorm dining halls. More than 150 student clubs work to strengthen academic life and cultural interaction. Examples of these clubs include the Anthropology Club, the Art Club, the Chess Club, and the Social Welfare Club.
