Rutgers University, officially known as Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is a research-focused public university founded in 1766 in the state of New Jersey in the United States. The eighth-oldest university in the United States and the second-oldest in New Jersey after Princeton University, Rutgers was originally established as a private institution in 1766 and was designated as the state university of New Jersey by the state legislature in 1945.
Operating across three campuses in New Jersey — New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden — Rutgers University is a member of the Association of American Universities, the Oak Ridge Associated Universities Consortium, and the Association of Research Universities. Rutgers University operates across three distinct campuses: Rutgers–New Brunswick, Rutgers–Newark, and Rutgers–Camden. Rutgers–New Brunswick, the university’s main campus, is not only the largest campus but also the original one. It spans Middlesex County in New Jersey, is located in the city of New Brunswick and the adjacent community of Piscataway, and consists of five smaller campuses along with several buildings in downtown New Brunswick.
The historic College Avenue Campus is situated close to downtown New Brunswick and includes the university’s central hub, Old Queens, and other nineteenth- and early twentieth-century buildings that make up the Queens Campus and Voorhees Mall. The New Brunswick Campus is home to 19 schools offering undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs.
Just like many other universities in the United States, Rutgers University is home to a large number of student clubs and organizations that bring together enthusiasts from virtually every area of interest. The university’s sports facilities give students the opportunity to lead a more active lifestyle and participate in a wide variety of sports, while social events are frequently held on campus.
