The campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) sits on a striking stretch of California's central coastline. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States. The 1,055-acre main campus is surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean. It lies just 10 miles west of downtown Santa Barbara, immediately next to the community of Isla Vista. The university has more than 200 buildings, among them state-of-the-art laboratories, lecture halls, libraries, and residential facilities.

Davidson Library is the main academic library, holding millions of volumes and wide digital resources. Storke Tower, at 175 meters tall, is an important campus landmark and a symbol of UCSB. The campus is also home to several major research centers. These include the Marine Science Institute, the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, and the California NanoSystems Institute. You have access to a wide range of recreation as well, from hiking in the nearby Santa Ynez Mountains to surfing and kayaking in the ocean just steps from the dormitories.

Campus Life

The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) has more than 500 student organizations, covering a wide variety of interests. Among them you will find academic, cultural, service-oriented, and recreational groups. Athletics holds an important place in campus culture at UCSB. The university fields 19 NCAA Division I teams, known as the Gauchos, competing primarily in the Big West Conference. Among these, the men's soccer team drew national attention in particular after winning the NCAA championship in 2006.

The spirited rivalry with Cal Poly — known as the “Blue-Green Rivalry” — stands out especially in men's soccer. It draws record-breaking crowds and builds a deep sense of community and school spirit. Beyond varsity sports, UCSB offers extensive club and intramural sports programs, including activities such as cycling, fencing, lacrosse, rowing, and rugby. These accommodate various skill levels and encourage active student participation. Traditions such as the annual “Deltopia” event in Isla Vista add to UCSB's own social fabric.
