Campus

Take a closer look at University of Washington (UW)

The University of Washington has three campuses: Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell.

The Seattle campus, founded in 1861, is the largest and most prestigious, spanning 700 acres in the University District with breathtaking views of Mount Rainier and Lake Washington. It is home to world-class facilities including the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, the UW Medical Center, and the College of Built Environments, and serves over 50,000 students.

The campus is known for its blend of historic and modern architecture, featuring iconic landmarks such as Drumheller Fountain, Red Square, and Suzzallo Library — a Gothic-style library often called the “Harry Potter Library” for its grand reading room.

The UW Medical Center, consistently ranked among the best hospitals in the U.S., is a major hub for research in medicine, biotechnology, and public health.

UW Tacoma, founded in 1990, is situated in the heart of downtown Tacoma and focuses on urban-serving education with strong programs in business, cybersecurity, nursing, and social work. The campus integrates historic buildings with modern facilities and has contributed to Tacoma's revitalization.

UW Bothell, also founded in 1990, is located northeast of Seattle and is known for its small class sizes, interdisciplinary programs, and commitment to sustainability.

Campus Life

Across UW's three campuses (Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell), there are more than 1,000 student organizations covering a wide range of interests, including cultural clubs, academic societies, service groups, and recreational activities.

The Associated Students of the University of Washington (ASUW) is the main student governing body, organizing major events, advocacy programs, and leadership opportunities.

The Seattle campus, the largest, has a particularly vibrant student life, with organizations like the Husky Union Building (HUB) serving as a hub of student engagement.

The Cherry Blossom Festival held each spring at the Quad is one of the university's most beloved traditions, inviting students and visitors to admire the beautiful blooming cherry trees.

Other notable events include Dawg Daze, a week-long orientation for new students, and W Day, a celebration of Husky pride featuring performances, giveaways, and rallies.

Sports and traditions play a significant role in UW's campus culture, especially on the Seattle campus, which competes in NCAA Division I athletics as a member of the Pac-12 Conference.

While the Bothell and Tacoma campuses are not part of NCAA sports, they have strong intramural and club sports programs as well as community events such as Husky 5K runs and student-led festivals.

Another long-standing tradition at UW Bothell is “Paint the Rock,” where students express their creativity and school pride by painting a large rock on campus.
