Michigan State University overview

Michigan State University (MSU), located in East Lansing, Michigan, was founded in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan.

One of the first institutions in the United States to focus specifically on scientific agriculture, MSU was originally established to provide hands-on training for farmers and workers, and following the Morrill Act of 1862, it foregrounded accessible education in agriculture, engineering, and applied sciences, serving as a model for the land-grant universities that would come after it.

In 1925 the institution was renamed Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science, and was later formally recognized in 1955 as Michigan State University, reflecting the breadth of its academic offerings and research capabilities.

Throughout its history, Michigan State University has played an important role in groundbreaking research and social progress. Notably, MSU was the first major university in the United States to admit women alongside men into its founding classes, taking a significant step toward gender equality in education.

Today MSU is a leading public research university, internationally recognized for its extensive contributions to education, nuclear physics, agriculture, and environmental science.

Within this expansive area are 556 buildings dedicated to academic, agricultural, residential, dining, and athletics activities. The campus is divided into distinct northern and southern sections by the Red Cedar River running through it.

The North Campus, the university's oldest area, features historic structures such as Beaumont Tower and the W. J. Beal Botanical Garden, and is distinguished by its Collegiate Gothic architecture and tree-lined pathways.

In contrast, the South Campus, developed after World War II, is home to major facilities such as the Cyclotron and the College of Law.

This section also includes extensive agricultural research areas and the MSU Agriculture and Livestock Education Center, which speaks to MSU's origins as an agricultural university.
