Operating under the names Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College from 1872 to 1896, Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute from 1896 to 1944, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute from 1944 to 1970, the university was elevated to state university status by the state legislature in 1970 and has produced more than 240,000 graduates since its founding.

Virginia Tech currently offers more than 240 degree programs across 11 colleges to more than 35,000 students.
