The main campus of the University of Pittsburgh is in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This urban campus spans 132 acres and holds most of Pitt's academic and administrative buildings, research centers, and student facilities. Its defining feature is the iconic Cathedral of Learning, a 42-story skyscraper that serves as the symbol of the university. It houses classrooms, libraries, and the famous Nationality Rooms. The main campus is closely connected to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), one of the nation's leading academic medical centers.

That connection enhances opportunities for medical research, training, and clinical education. Beyond Oakland, the University of Pittsburgh runs four regional campuses in Pennsylvania: Pitt-Bradford, Pitt-Greensburg, Pitt-Johnstown, and Pitt-Titusville. These campuses were established to expand access to higher education across the state. They offer smaller classes and a more intimate learning environment, together with the quality and resources of a major research university.

Pitt has more than 600 student organizations, so it covers a wide range of interests. They run from academic and professional development to cultural, recreational, and service-oriented groups. The Student Organization Resource Center (SORC) supports these groups and enables them to operate effectively. The Pitt Program Council organizes annual events such as “Fall Fest” and “Bigelow Bash,” with live music, food, and various activities. These events promote a strong sense of community and school spirit.

Athletics and traditions play an important role in uniting the Pitt community. The university's athletic teams, known as the Pittsburgh Panthers, compete in various sports, with a particular emphasis on football and basketball. Pitt's famous student cheering section for basketball is the “Oakland Zoo.” It is known for creating an electrifying atmosphere at games and boosting the home court advantage. Football traditions include "Victory Lights," where the upper portion of the Cathedral of Learning is illuminated in gold after significant athletic victories.

Other traditions include rubbing the nose of the Millennium Panther statue outside the William Pitt Union. Students do this for good luck before exams or games.
