The main campus of the University of Pittsburgh is located in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Spanning 132 acres, this urban campus is home to most of Pitt's academic and administrative buildings, research centers, and student facilities. A defining feature of the Oakland campus is the iconic Cathedral of Learning, a 42-story skyscraper that serves as the symbol of the university and houses classrooms, libraries, and the famous Nationality Rooms.

The main campus is closely connected to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), one of the nation's leading academic medical centers, which enhances opportunities for medical research, training, and clinical education.

In addition to the Oakland campus, the University of Pittsburgh operates four regional campuses in Pennsylvania: Pitt-Bradford, Pitt-Greensburg, Pitt-Johnstown, and Pitt-Titusville. These campuses were established to expand access to higher education across the state while offering smaller classes and a more intimate learning environment, while at the same time providing the quality and resources of a major research university. Each regional campus offers undergraduate programs, extracurricular activities, and community engagement initiatives tailored to the needs of its local population.

Pitt caters to a wide range of interests with more than 600 student organizations, from academic and professional development to cultural, recreational, and service-oriented groups. The Student Organization Resource Center (SORC) supports these groups and enables them to operate effectively. Annual events organized by the Pitt Program Council, such as “Fall Fest” and “Bigelow Bash,” feature live music, food, and various activities, promoting a strong sense of community and school spirit. Athletics and traditions play an important role in uniting the Pitt community.

The university's athletic teams, known as the Pittsburgh Panthers, compete in various sports with a particular emphasis on football and basketball. Pitt's famous student cheering section for basketball, the “Oakland Zoo,” is renowned for creating an electrifying atmosphere at games and boosting the home court advantage. Football traditions include "Victory Lights," where the upper portion of the Cathedral of Learning is illuminated in gold following significant athletic victories.

Students also participate in traditions such as rubbing the nose of the Millennium Panther statue outside the William Pitt Union for good luck before exams or games.
