Campus

Take a closer look at Duke University

Duke University covers 35.18 square kilometers and has 256 active buildings. Duke Forest takes up 28.51 square kilometers of that area and holds the Duke Lemur Center, the world's largest sanctuary for endangered moist-nosed primates. The campus has 4 main parts: West, East, Central and the Medical Center, which includes the medical school. Free shuttle transportation is provided. West campus, also called the main campus, was designed by Julian Francis Abele, one of America's foremost architects.

It holds many academic and administrative buildings, 2-3-4th grade classrooms and three large libraries. It is also home to the 64-meter Duke Chapel, the tallest building in Durham, which seats 1,600 people. The historic Cameron Indoor Stadium, the basketball arena, stands there as well. East campus has the freshman dormitories, freshman dining and social facilities, 2 large libraries and select faculty. Central campus holds the Nasher Museum of Art, the Duke Police Station, recreational centers for students, social facilities and sports fields.

It also has the “Devil's Den”, a general gathering place for students. Between the West and Central campuses lies the 22-hectare Sarah P. Duke Gardens, established in 1930. On the Atlantic shore of Beafort, Duke also keeps a Marine Laboratory for the study of marine biology.

Campus Life

Duke University places great importance on students' social interactions. There are more than 400 student clubs, and almost 40% of students belong to fraternities and sororities. To build a sense of belonging and unity, undergraduates must live on campus for their first 3 years. Duke Student Government (DSG) organizes and manages all social, cultural, intellectual and recreational activities planned for students. Many other organizations founded and run by students are also active within the university.

Among them are Hoof 'n' Horn, the second oldest student-based musical theater group in the country, and 7 Acapella groups recognized by the university. Sports carry a special weight here, and the men's basketball team is a central part of campus life. Near Cameron Stadium lies a grassy area called Krzyzewskiville, or K-Ville for short. The team's Cameron Crazies are famous for living in tents there for weeks before important games, to support their team.

Other popular events include the “Tailgate” celebration before football games, with extravagant costumes and dancing, the Midnight Breakfast at the end of each semester, the bridge painting during freshman orientation week, the Last Day of Classes (LDOC) party on the final day of classes, parties at the “Big Barn” on Halloween and Christmas, the Keggerskating party at the skating rink, and weekly Jazz events (Jazz @ the Mary Lou).
