Duke University covers 35.18 square kilometers with 256 active buildings. Of this area, 28.51 square kilometers is covered by Duke Forest, including the Duke Lemur Center, the world's largest sanctuary for endangered moist-nosed primates. There are 4 main sections of the campus: West, East, Central and the Medical Center, which includes the medical school, and free shuttle transportation is provided. Designed by Julian Francis Abele, one of America's foremost architects, the West campus, also known as the main campus, features many academic and administrative buildings, 2-3-4th grade classrooms, three large libraries, the 64-meter Duke Chapel, the tallest building in Durham with a seating capacity of 1,600 people, and the historic basketball stadium Cameron Indoor Stadium. Freshman dormitories, freshman dining and social facilities, 2 large libraries, and select faculty are located on the East campus. The Central campus includes the Nasher Museum of Art, the Duke Police Station, recreational centers for students, social facilities, sports fields and the “Devil's Den”, a general gathering place for students. Between the West and Central campuses is the 22-hectare Sarah P. Duke Gardens, established in 1930. In addition, on the Atlantic shore of Beafort is Duke University's Marine Laboratory for the study of marine biology.

In order to develop a sense of belonging and unity, undergraduate students must live on campus for their first 3 years. In addition, many different organizations founded and managed by students continue their active work within the university. There is also Hoof 'n' Horn, the second oldest student-based musical theater group in the country, and 7 Acapella groups recognized by the university. Sports have a special importance for Duke University. The men's basketball team in particular is an important part of campus life.
