University of York overview

Located in York, England, the University of York was founded in 1963 with the mission of meeting the region's higher education needs and delivering forward-thinking education.

Starting out with just 230 students and six academic departments, the university has grown significantly since its founding to become a member of the Russell Group — a prestigious group of 24 leading universities in England — and one of the top research universities in the country. Consistently ranked among the United Kingdom's best universities, the university has earned a strong international reputation, particularly in disciplines such as archaeology, English literature, biology, and social sciences. York has made important contributions to research and innovation through more than 22 departments and research centers working in areas such as health sciences, artificial intelligence, and environmental sustainability.

Also the founder of the influential Centre for Medieval Studies, the university has been involved in major research projects funded by both the UK government and the European Union.

Campus

Take a closer look at University of York

Located in the southeast of York, England, and spread across approximately 500 acres, the University of York consists of two main campuses: Campus East and Campus West. King's Manor, where History and Archaeology courses are taught, is approximately 3 km from these two campuses. Campus West — the main campus, home to the historic Heslington Hall built in the late 1500s — houses the Faculties of Biology, Psychology, Physics, Electronic Engineering, Chemistry, and Music, as well as the Hull York Medical School, which is jointly run with the University of Hull.

Campus East, within walking distance of Campus West, is a newer campus featuring more modern buildings and is home to the Faculties of Law, Business, Computer Science, and Theatre, Film and Television. While Campus West features historic structures such as Heslington Hall, an artificial lake, walking paths, bridges, and an observatory, Campus East is a newer campus with more contemporary buildings.

Campus Life

The University of York is approximately 20 minutes by bus from the city center; while the university encourages students to cycle and walk, regular bus and train services are also available. Transportation between the two campuses is generally handled on foot or by bicycle. With more than 60 sports clubs, both campuses have athletic facilities under the names York Sport Centre and York Sport Village where students can pursue sporting activities. These facilities include approximately 17 acres of grass sports fields, 2 swimming pools, an Olympic-sized velodrome, and numerous fitness centers.

For undergraduate and postgraduate student accommodation, a variety of dormitory options are available on campus, designed with all student needs in mind. In addition to the many cafes, bars, and restaurants on campus, two supermarkets are available for student use. Beyond these amenities, there are more than 200 student societies students can join during their academic careers — including drama and performing arts societies, clubs representing international students' home countries, community volunteering groups, and an astronomy society, to name just a few.
