University College London (UCL)

University College London (UCL) began in 1826 as the " London University", founded by Henry Brougham, James Mill and the poet Thomas Campbell. Their plan drew on the ideas of the philosopher Jeremy Bentham. The three founders wanted a secular university open to all, regardless of religious or social background, in contrast to the various restrictions imposed by Oxford and Cambridge Universities at the time. University College London was the first university to admit students regardless of their religion. It was also the first to admit male and female students on equal terms.

The university played a crucial role in forming disciplines such as English, geography and experimental psychology in Britain. After the Second World War it went through remarkable growth, with new buildings, new faculties and a significant rise in student numbers. In 2014 it merged with the Institute of Education and strengthened its research in the social sciences and educational sciences. Today UCL is consistently ranked at the top of world university rankings.

It is recognized for research excellence in fields as diverse as medicine, life sciences, physics, law, engineering, the arts and the humanities.

Students from Belgium

• Minimum equivalent entry requirement for A level grades ABB
  • Award of the Certificat d'Enseignement Secondaire Superieur (CESS) or Diploma van Secundair Onderwijs with an overall grade of 82.5

Students from France

• Minimum equivalent entry requirement for A level grades ABB
  • Award of the French Baccalauréat with 13 overall
  • Expert Mathematics [“mathématiques expertes”] option studied along with Mathematics Specialty in year 13 will be accepted where Further Mathematics is a required or preferred subject.
  • Biochemistry BSc/MSci will accept Mathematics Specialty studied in year 12 with Additional Mathematics [“mathématiques complémentaires”] studied in year 13 to meet the Mathematics subject requirement.
  • Medical Sciences and Engineering BSc/Msci will accept Physics&Chemistry Specialty studied in year 12 as the third subject.

Students from Germany

• Minimum equivalent entry requirement for A level grades ABB
  • Award of the Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife (Abitur) with 1.8 overall and two subject marks of 12 (sehr gut)

Students from Ireland

• Minimum equivalent entry requirement for A level grades ABB
  • Award of the Irish Leaving Certificate with six subjects of grade H6 or above at Higher Level, to include four subjects at H1, H2, H2, H2

Students from Italy

• Minimum equivalent entry requirement for A level grades ABB
  • Award of the Diploma di Esame di Stato with an overall mark of 87

Students from the US

• Minimum equivalent entry requirements for A level grades A*A*A
  • 5,5,5,5,5 in five distinctive AP subjects, taken in the final three years of high school

  • Manitoba High School Graduation Diploma with five credits in specialised (S) grade 12 subjects, each passed at 83% or higher.
  • Newfoundland Grade 12 High School Diploma with at least five academic grade 12 subjects, each passed at 83% or higher.
  • Nova Scotia High School Completion Certificate with at least five academic level 5 (Honours University Preparatory) subjects or level 4 (University Preparatory) subjects, each passed at 83% or higher.
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma with at least six grade 12 U (University) or M (University/College) courses, each passed at 83% or higher.
  • Quebec Diplome d'Etudes Collegiales (DEC) / Diploma of Collegial Studies (DCS) with 83% overall.
  • Saskatchewan Five Grade 12/Division IV Standing subjects with 83% each.

Admission Requirements for International Students

Graduate

If you are an international student applying to a graduate program at UCL, you must meet the admission requirements set out below.

• Bachelor's Degree Diploma
• High Grade Point Average
• Official transcripts of the courses you took during your college/university education
• Work experience may be required for certain programs
• Certificate in English Proficiency (for students from countries whose first language is not English)
  • A certificate in English proficiency from an internationally recognized test such as IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, CAE, CPE.
• A GRE/GMAT exam score may be required, in line with the specific admission requirements of certain programs.
• UCL may also require you to sit various exams and obtain a sufficient score. This follows the admission requirements specific to the program you apply to.
