Originally established in 1849 as Bedford College and renamed Royal Holloway College following the establishment of the Egham Campus in 1879 by Thomas Holloway — a Victorian-era entrepreneur and philanthropist — the institution was formally opened by Queen Victoria in 1886. Royal Holloway College became one of the founding colleges of the University of London in 1900, and Bedford College and Royal Holloway College were merged in 1985. Royal Holloway University of London's campus is located in Egham, Surrey, approximately 30 kilometers from central London. Built on 55 hectares of woodland between Windsor and Heathrow, the campus is closest to Egham Station and is approximately 45 minutes from Waterloo Station in central London. Founder's Building, which occupies a large portion of the campus, houses a kitchen, student cafeteria, lecture hall, library, student rooms, and the famous Picture Gallery.
