Founded in Beijing in 1958, the university later moved to Hefei, where its main campus stands today. It has five campuses in Hefei — the capital and largest city of Anhui Province — as well as one of China's major national scientific research and education bases. Hefei sits in central eastern China and has a highly developed transportation system. A robust transportation network connects the city by airport, rail, and highway, so reaching the campuses is straightforward. Rivers surround Hefei and give it a romantic character, and the city has a temperate climate and magnificent scenery.
Campus life at the University of Science and Technology of China is lively and varied. On campus you will find cafes and restaurants, computer rooms, sports facilities, student clubs, banks, and stationery shops. Numerous dining halls serve students and staff, but they keep set hours. Most dining halls, for example, open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for lunch and from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for dinner. Inside the dining halls, rows of food stalls line the room. To order, tell the server which dishes you want and swipe your campus card at the payment machine.
If you are an international student, you can arrange on-campus housing. When you move into a dormitory, you will need to sign a contract and complete the check-in process. Various types of dormitory accommodations are available to international students, including three-bedroom and two-bedroom apartment-style units. Rates vary by the type of housing.
Within the campus, cycling and walking are the most common ways to get around. You can buy your own bicycle or use bike-sharing services. Note, however, that motorcycles are not permitted on campus.
