Today it is a leading research university under the direct administration of China's Ministry of Education. Internationally, it is known as the 'Cambridge of the East.' Zhejiang University has consistently ranked among China's top universities in academic strength and in teaching, research, and public service. Its fields of study span 12 major disciplines — philosophy, literature, history, education, science, engineering, economics, law, management, arts, agriculture, and medicine. This makes it the most comprehensive university in China.
In 2022 the university had a budget of 26.1 billion Chinese yuan. That made it the second largest in China by budget, after Tsinghua.

Zhejiang University's main campus is in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province. Hangzhou is a coastal city in eastern China, 180 km south of Shanghai, China's largest commercial hub. It is one of China's seven ancient capitals, with a history spanning more than 2,200 years. The campus is designed in a modern style, set within this deep tradition and history. Zhejiang University's five campuses have advanced teaching, research, and recreational facilities, including computing centers, sports centers, and entertainment centers.
The university library holds more than 5,940,000 volumes, over 100,000 e-books, and more than 17,000 full-text Chinese and foreign-language journals.
