The university's former main campus was located in Xujiahui in the Xuhui District of Shanghai, a Catholic area home to several educational institutions. The current main campus is in the Minhang District. The Minhang campus is situated on the outskirts of metropolitan Shanghai. Founded in 1987, this younger campus was once farmland. To its south lies Zizhu Science Park, where research and development centers for high-tech companies such as Intel, ST Microelectronics, Microsoft, SanDisk, and others are located. Currently, the majority of the university's administrative and academic structure, as well as most of its undergraduate and graduate students, are based at the main campus.
Ranked 4th among Chinese universities with the most international students, all of the institution's campuses are designed and built to meet student needs. The campuses feature apartments where international students can stay. Rooms are typically single or double occupancy. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and basic furniture. The bed size is 120cm x 200cm and you are required to bring your own bedding.
Built in 1896 as a small reading room when Nanyang Public School was established, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) Library is today one of the most respected university libraries in China. Students can both conduct research and study at the library. Equipped with rich resources and state-of-the-art facilities, the SJTU Library now has an open and integrated service system that facilitates and encourages research initiatives across all disciplines.
Student associations, an important part of SJTU's campus culture, offer a wide variety of unique and popular activities. There are currently 168 student associations that can be classified into five main categories. The total number of students in these associations has reached 17,000, of whom 8,000 are active members.
