Founded in 1361, the University of Pavia (Università degli Studi di Pavia) is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Although the institution's roots extend back to 825 as a school of civil and canon law under the Lombard Kingdom, it was officially recognized as a university in the 14th century by Galeazzo II Visconti, Duke of Milan.
Having expanded its curriculum beyond law and theology to encompass medicine, philosophy, and the humanities during the Renaissance and early modern periods, the University of Pavia gained prominence thanks to the support of Austrian Empress Maria Theresa, who reorganized the university in the 18th century to make it a center of scientific research and education.
