University of Padua overview

The University of Padua ("University of Padova/Padua, Università degli Studi di Padova, UNIPD) is a public university founded in 1222 by a group of students and teachers who came from Bologna, in the city of Padua in the Veneto region of northern Italy. The second oldest university in Italy and the sixth oldest in the world — after the University of Paris, founded between 1160 and 1250, and the University of Cambridge, founded in 1209 — the University of Padua celebrated its 800th anniversary in higher education in 2022.

In addition to being one of the oldest universities in the world, it ranks among the most successful universities in Italy and even in Europe. Associated with figures such as Nicolaus Copernicus, John Caius, Thomas Browne, Albertus Magnus, and Federico Faggin, the University of Padua has produced hundreds of thousands of graduates since 1222 and has trained pioneering professionals in the fields of science, arts, literature, and politics, providing higher education opportunities to more than 70,000 students today.

Take a closer look at University of Padua

Located in the heart of northeastern Italy in the Veneto Region, less than 40 km from Venice, Padua is one of Italy's most beautiful cities with a history spanning over 3,000 years. Like its peers founded during the same period, the University of Padua is a city university rather than a campus university, and the majority of the buildings where the university operates are spread throughout the center of Padua.

The departments of the School of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine are located at the Agripolis campus, which is less than 10 kilometers from the center of Padua, in order to better meet the requirements of these types of disciplines.

The university's other research and teaching facilities are located in various cities in the Veneto region, such as Vicenza, Treviso, Rovigo, and Chioggia-Venice. Efficient air, rail, and road connections to major cities in Italy and abroad, an extensive cycling network (over 170 km), and multiple bike-sharing options available at special discounts for students make getting around the city of Padua easy and highly sustainable.

Campus Life

As a city university, the University of Padua is deeply intertwined with the social and cultural life of the city of Padua. The majority of the buildings where the university operates are within walking distance of the city's most popular areas. The University of Padua also provides students with various housing options in dormitories and student residences. The Centro Universitario Sportivo, which operates under the university and serves students, offers students the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports such as athletics, rugby, volleyball, basketball, and rowing.
