University of Florence overview

The Università degli Studi di Firenze, or the University of Florence, is a public university founded in 1321 in the city of Florence, Italy. Originally established by the Florentine Republic as a Studium Generale, the university became one of Italy's first centers of higher learning, with a strong focus on civil and canon law, literature, and medicine. Experiencing significant growth in the 15th century and rising to prominence during the Italian Renaissance, the university became a center of intellectual and artistic advancement, attracting scholars from across Europe. The University of Florence, whose alumni and faculty have included luminaries such as Galileo Galilei — who taught mathematics there — and Nobel Prize in Physics laureate Carlo Rubbia, has made important contributions to a wide range of fields, from art history to scientific research.
