Wesleyan University, located in Middletown, Connecticut, is a private liberal arts university. The university, founded in 1831 and named after John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, is now a secular institution. Wesleyan is renowned for its humanities and sciences programs and is a member of the Little Three, a group of prestigious liberal arts colleges in New England that also includes Williams and Amherst colleges. The university is one of the United States' oldest original Methodist institutions of higher education.

Approximately 3,000 undergraduates and 200 graduate students attend Wesleyan. The undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio is approximately 8:1, creating a small and intimate learning environment. It offers more than 900 courses in 40 departments and 44 main disciplines of study, and its College of Letters, College of Social Studies, and College of Film and the Moving Image are renowned for their programs. The 316-acre campus is home to the Center for the Arts, Exley Science Center, Usdan University Center, and Freeman Athletic Center. In addition, it has a University Press, which is a prominent academic book publisher.

Wesleyan has been a leader in a number of academic disciplines. It was the first institution in the United States to grant a degree in ethnomusicology and to establish a distinct department for the study of molecular biology and biochemistry. The school's athletic teams, nicknamed the Cardinals, compete in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) of NCAA Division III. Notable Wesleyan alumni include Lin-Manuel Miranda (creator of the musicals "Hamilton" and "In The Heights"), Bradley Whitford (actor known for "The West Wing"), and Joshua Boger (founder of Vertex Pharmaceuticals).
