Prospective students applying to undergraduate programs at Tohoku University are expected to meet the following criteria:

Undergraduate courses taught in Japanese begin in April. Applicants must take the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), which is held in June or November.

The university's four main campuses are located in Sendai, Japan:
- Katahira Campus
- Kawauchi Campus
- Seiryo Campus
- Aobayama Campus
The university's administrative offices and principal institutes are located on the Katahira Campus. The Kawauchi Campus is divided into north and south sections. The North Kawauchi Campus houses all first- and second-year undergraduate students, while the South Kawauchi Campus is home to the Faculties of Law, Education, Economics, and Letters. The Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry are on the Seiryo Campus. Science, Engineering, Pharmacy, and Agriculture are on the Aobayama Campus.
The city of Sendai is a multicultural place where you can experience the rich culture of northern Japan while enjoying a rewarding study-abroad experience. The university campuses feature modern classrooms, state-of-the-art laboratories and workshops, cafes and restaurants where students can socialize, recreation areas, and shopping centers.
The International Support Office on campus is a place where international students and researchers can get assistance with various matters such as campus life, housing, and health services. Students can receive support especially regarding accommodation. Tohoku University offers two types of dormitories for international students: University Houses, where international students live alongside Japanese students, and International Houses, exclusively for international students and researchers.
