How to get into Hokkaido University

Hokkaido University offers a preparatory program called the "Hokkaido International Foundation" to prepare students who are just beginning university for higher education and to help them develop Japanese language proficiency.

In addition, prospective international students wishing to apply to undergraduate programs offered by Hokkaido University must meet the following admission requirements.

  • Completion of 12 Years of Basic Education
  • 4-Year High School Diploma
    • A Turkish high school diploma must be evaluated by the relevant authorities in Japan and an equivalency certificate must be obtained.
  • Strong GPA
    or
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
    or
  • SAT/ACT Score
    • In addition, prospective international students must have taken and completed Advanced Placement (AP) courses relevant to the undergraduate program to which they are applying.
  • English Proficiency Documentation for programs taught in English
    • English proficiency certificate obtained through exams such as TOEFL or IELTS
  • Japanese Proficiency Documentation for programs taught in Japanese
    • Japanese proficiency certificate obtained through the "Japanese-Language Proficiency Test"
  • Official transcripts documenting the courses taken and grades earned throughout high school

In addition to the above, prospective international students may be required to take exams administered by Hokkaido University and/or the relevant authorities in Japan, depending on the undergraduate program to which they are applying.

 

Prospective students wishing to apply to graduate programs offered by Hokkaido University must meet the following admission requirements.

  • 4-Year Bachelor's Degree
  • Strong GPA
  • English Proficiency Documentation for programs taught in English
    • English proficiency certificate obtained through exams such as TOEFL or IELTS
  • Japanese Proficiency Documentation for programs taught in Japanese
    • Japanese proficiency certificate obtained through the "Japanese-Language Proficiency Test"
  • Official transcripts documenting the courses taken and grades earned throughout undergraduate study
  • GRE/GMAT scores may be required depending on the program-specific admission requirements of the applicant's chosen department.
