Nagoya University is a research university in Japan. The Japanese government selected its School of Medicine as the Top Medical University in the Top Global University Project. The university ranks 3rd among the highest institutions of higher education in Japan. As of 2021, seven Nobel Prize winners are counted among its graduates and faculty.
Nagoya University's roots stretch back to 1871, and the university took its modern form in 1939. That long tradition of education has let the university establish its core philosophy for teaching and research, creating a unique body of knowledge. Nagoya has cultivated some of Japan's most prominent leaders. It holds nearly 200 international academic exchange agreements with overseas institutions.
Nagoya University is home to a number of research institutes. These include the Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules and the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research. How to get into Nagoya University
If you want to enroll in an undergraduate program at Nagoya University, you must meet the following requirements:
- Completion of 12 years of primary and secondary education
- High GPA diploma
- International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma
- Letter of recommendation
- Statement of purpose
- English proficiency certificate earned through scores on exams such as TOEFL or IELTS
- Official transcripts listing the courses you took and the grades you received throughout high school
- Application fee (5,000 JPY)*
If you want to enroll in a graduate program at Nagoya University, you must meet the following requirements:
- 4-year bachelor's degree diploma
- High GPA
- Letter of recommendation
- Statement of purpose
- English proficiency certificate earned through scores on exams such as TOEFL or IELTS
- Official transcripts listing the courses you took and the grades you received throughout your studies
- Other academic documents and certificates, if any
- Application fee (5,000 JPY)*
*If you run into any issues paying the fee via PayPal, you may pay by bank transfer instead. Please note that confirming your payment and issuing an application number will then take longer.
All submitted application documents cannot be returned under any circumstances. So if an original document can only be issued once, please send a certified true copy instead. Your school, the Japanese embassy, or a notary office may provide a certified true copy.
If you apply to a graduate department, you may be asked to provide SAT and ACT scores.

Nagoya University's main campus is in Nagoya, the fourth most populous city in Japan after Tokyo, Yokohama, and Osaka. The university's campuses house 9 faculties and 13 graduate schools. Nagoya University also has 3 research institutes and 18 research centers.
The campuses are also home to numerous libraries designed to provide the academic resources needed for education and research. The Tsurumai Campus has a Medical Library, and the Daiko Campus has a Health Sciences Library. The Higashiyama Campus houses the Central Library — the university's largest. It also holds 22 libraries affiliated with schools and departments, including Law, Economics, Science, and Engineering.
Campus life at Nagoya University is lively and creative. You can develop yourself and meet fellow students through a wide range of events, student clubs, volunteer campaigns, and academic conferences. The university also hosts numerous festivals. The Nagoya University Festival (Meidai-Sai) is held every year in early June, and the Nagoya University Festival Committee organizes it. It is one of the largest university festivals in the Tokai region, drawing approximately 80,000 visitors each year.
The university offers a wide variety of activities run by extracurricular clubs and communities, including approximately 100 events, lab tours, and presentations. The Federation of Liberal Arts Circles at the university was established to make campus life more active and creative — to strengthen communication among students, improve students' literacy, encourage mutual understanding, foster friendship, and promote cultural activities. You can take part in the many events and activities the Federation of Liberal Arts Circles organizes.
By total number of graduates, Nagoya University ranks 373rd in the world, 71st in Asia, and 31st in Japan. Notable alumni include:
- Gotō Shinpei — a Japanese politician who served as a cabinet minister of the Empire of Japan during the Taishō and early Shōwa periods.
- Shōichirō Toyoda — served as president of Toyota Motor Corporation from 1992 to 1999.
- Ayuko Suzuki — Japanese long-distance runner.
- Osamu Shimomura — Japanese organic chemist and marine biologist.
- Hiroshi Amano — Japanese physicist, engineer, and inventor.
- Toshihide Maskawa — recipient of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physics.
- Ryōji Noyori — won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2001.
- Takeshi Umehara — author and philosopher.
- Takeshi Uchiyamada — a Japanese businessman who has served as chairman of Toyota since 2013.
- Makoto Kobayashi — awarded one-quarter of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physics.
