Lancaster University overview

Lancaster University is a public research university in England, and it ranks consistently among the top institutions in the United Kingdom. The university was founded in 1964 by Royal Charter. It came out of the 1960s wave of new universities that expanded higher education across the UK.

Since its founding, Lancaster has used a collegiate system like those at Oxford and Cambridge. Several residential colleges make up that system, and they build a strong sense of community among students and staff.

The university began with a focus on the humanities and social sciences. It has since built strong programs across disciplines including science, technology, engineering, management, and health.

Lancaster University is a member of the N8 Research Partnership, a select group of research-intensive universities in Northern England. The university has made significant contributions in areas such as environmental science, data science, and cybersecurity.

The university's Business School holds triple accreditation (AMBA, EQUIS, and AACSB) and ranks consistently among the best business schools in the UK.

Campus

Take a closer look at Lancaster University

Lancaster University's main campus stands in 560 acres of parkland in Bailrigg, just south of the city of Lancaster in northwest England.

The campus is self-contained and known for its woodland areas, ponds, and modern architecture, which make for a peaceful yet lively academic setting.

The Bailrigg campus holds the university's academic departments, research centers, student residences, and social facilities.

At the heart of the campus is Alexandra Square, a central hub. Around it stand key buildings such as the library, the Great Hall, the Student Union (LUSU), and various cafes and shops.

Beyond its main campus in the UK, Lancaster University also runs various international campuses and academic partnerships that extend its global reach.

Campus Life

As a student you belong to one of nine colleges: eight for undergraduates and one for postgraduate students. Each college has its own student-led executive, sports teams, social events, and inter-college competitions.

This structure creates a tight-knit community and encourages friendly rivalry. That rivalry shows in events such as the annual Carter Shield (a collegiate sports competition) and Patriots, a major sporting weekend between rival universities.

Lancaster University Students' Union (LUSU) represents students and supports more than 175 societies and clubs. These span a wide range of interests, from academic and cultural groups to political activism, performing arts, gaming, and volunteering. You can follow an interest you already have or take on new experiences.

Sports are an important part of student life at Lancaster. The campus has comprehensive facilities, including a sports center with a gymnasium, swimming pool, climbing wall, and outdoor pitches.

The university competes in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) leagues. It also hosts Roses, an annual event held against the University of York and inspired by the historic Wars of the Roses. Roses is one of the most well-known inter-university events in England.

Freshers' Week introduces new students to campus life with social activities and club fairs. At the other end of the year, celebrations such as the Grad Ball and Extravs stand out for students.
