King George II of Great Britain, who was also the Elector of Hanover, founded the University of Göttingen (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen) in 1734.

The University of Göttingen has a decentralized campus. Its faculties and institutes are spread across the city rather than gathered in one location.
The central campus holds many of the university's key institutions. These include the Aula building, the historic Göttingen State and University Library, and Wilhelmsplatz, where the main administration is located.
