University of Göttingen overview

The University of Göttingen (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen) was founded in 1734 by King George II of Great Britain, who was also the Elector of Hanover.

Opening its doors officially in 1737, the university quickly gained renown as one of the leading centers of Enlightenment thought, emphasizing academic freedom and scientific progress.

Becoming one of the first modern research universities in Germany, it played an influential role in shaping the Humboldtian model of higher education that would later influence universities around the world.

Göttingen's library, the Göttingen State and University Library founded in 1734, is one of the largest and most important research libraries in Germany.

Throughout the 19th century the university became a hub for mathematics, physics, and philology, attracting scholars from across Europe.

Over the centuries, the University of Göttingen has produced numerous Nobel Prize-winning scholars — particularly in physics and chemistry, including Max Born, Otto Hahn, Werner Heisenberg, and Enrico Fermi — and became a world center for quantum mechanics and mathematics in the early 20th century, led by figures such as David Hilbert and Carl Friedrich Gauss.
