Rather than being a campus university like those founded during the same period, the University of Tübingen is a city university spread throughout the city of Tübingen. Tübingen is one of five classic university cities — alongside Marburg, Göttingen, Freiburg, and Heidelberg — and the buildings where the University of Tübingen operates are concentrated in four distinct areas. Some of the university's humanities departments are housed in buildings in Tübingen's historic district that date back to the university's founding, as well as in Schloss Hohentübingen, a medieval castle. In the Wilhelmstraße district to the northeast of the historic city center, you'll find the university's administrative buildings and the remaining humanities departments, along with the main building of the university library and the university cafeteria. The university's natural sciences departments are located on the Morgenstelle hill north of Tübingen's historic center, in buildings completed in the 1970s, while the teaching hospitals are situated between Wilhelmstraße and Morgenstelle in an area known as the Klinikum.
Students of the University of Tübingen make up one third of the city's population, and as a result they have a major influence on the city's cultural activities. While there is a general decline in social and cultural activities during university vacations, the academic term is quite lively. The university is home to numerous student clubs and organizations that bring together enthusiasts from virtually every area of interest.
The University of Tübingen also offers physical education classes through a program called Hochschulsport in its own sports facilities, and since the university has a sports science department with many different facilities, students from other programs can also participate in various sports courses, whether on teams or individually. Additionally, the city's market square, Hohentübingen Castle, the Boxenstop Museum, the Hölderlin Tower, and the university's botanical garden are among the must-see attractions in Tübingen.
