Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU)

The Geschwister-Scholl-Platz Campus, the main campus of Ludwig Maximilian University, sits in the center of Munich. Academics from different faculties now use it for lectures and seminars. One of the lecture halls that hosts them is the famous “Great Aula”, where the Bavarian State Parliament reconvened in 1946. Around the campus you will find faculties covering departments such as Linguistics, Literary Studies, Social Sciences and Physics. The University Library of Ludwig Maximilian University is well known and holds more than 5 million publications.

It stands in the south wing of the Main Building on the campus. The Bavarian State Library has more than 10.5 million titles in its catalog. It also has a unique collection of the rarest books and documents.

Ludwig Maximilian University's research in medicine, the biological sciences and the natural sciences is known worldwide. It takes place on the Grosshadern/Martinsried Campus in the south-west of Munich. That campus is home to the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital. It also holds the Grosshadern Medical Center, which is part of the University Hospitals of Munich system. The Faculties of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Biology are based there as well. So are the internationally known Max Planck Institutes for Biochemistry and Neurobiology and the Helmholtz Center.

The Sendlinger Tor Campus holds various specialized facilities tied to the University's Faculty of Medicine. A major transformation project is planned for this campus in the near future. Ludwig Maximilian University plans to build a new Earth Sciences building here. It also plans to bring the departments that make up the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics together on campus.

Finally, the Oberschleissheim Campus lies about 15 kilometers from the city center. It holds the teaching and research farm of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, with its various institutes and clinics. In the near future, almost the entire Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is planned to move to the 15 hectares of land on this campus. That would make it one of the largest research and training centers for veterinarians in Europe. It would bring together about 2000 students and doctoral candidates, as well as 600 staff.

More than 100,000 students live in Munich, and about half of them are at Ludwig Maximilian University. The university's institutes and research centers are spread across Munich. A few buildings stand in Oberschleissheim and in the suburbs of Garching, Maisach and Bad Tölz. The main buildings of the university are grouped around Geschwister-Scholl-Platz and Professor-Huber-Platz on Ludwigstrasse. That street leads to the side streets Akademiestraße, Schellingstraße and Veterinärstraße.

Although the university buildings are spread throughout the city of Munich, the main campus gives you a wide range of transportation options. Campus life at Ludwig Maximilian University is very colorful. Events are often organized for almost every field of study and activity that students work in and are interested in. Ludwig Maximilian University has many societies you can join, such as Humanitarian Groups, International Organizations, Student Council and Career-Oriented Student Groups.
