Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU)

The Geschwister-Scholl-Platz Campus in the center of Munich, the main campus of Ludwig Maximilian University, is now used for seminars and lectures by academics from different faculties. The famous “Great Aula”, where the Bavarian State Parliament reconvened in 1946, is one of the lecture halls where these lectures and seminars are held. Around the Geschwister-Scholl-Platz Campus, there are various faculties representing departments such as Linguistics, Literary Studies, Social Sciences and Physics.

The renowned University Library of Ludwig Maximilian University, with more than 5 million publications in its collection, is located in the south wing of the Main Building on the campus, while the Bavarian State Library, with more than 10.5 million titles in its catalog, has a unique collection of the rarest books and documents.

Ludwig Maximilian University's world-renowned research in the fields of medicine, biological sciences and natural sciences takes place on the Grosshadern/Martinsried Campus in the south-west of Munich. The Grosshadern/Martinsried Campus is home to the Faculty of Medicine of Ludwig Maximilian University, the Grosshadern Medical Center, part of the University Hospitals of Munich system, the University Hospital and the Faculties of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Biology, as well as the internationally renowned Max Planck Institutes for Biochemistry and Neurobiology and the Helmholtz Center.

The Sendlinger Tor Campus has various specialized facilities associated with the University's Faculty of Medicine. A major transformation project is planned for the campus in the near future, with Ludwig Maximilian University planning to build a new Earth Sciences building on this campus and to bring the departments that make up the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics together on campus.

Finally, the teaching and research farm of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, with its various institutes and clinics, is located on the Oberschleissheim Campus, about 15 kilometers from the city center. In the near future, it is planned to relocate almost the entire Faculty of Veterinary Medicine to the 15 hectares of land on the Oberschleissheim Campus, making it one of the largest research and training centers for veterinarians in Europe with about 2000 students and doctoral candidates, as well as 600 staff.

More than 100,000 students live in Munich, approximately half of them at Ludwig Maximilian University. The institutes and research centers of the Ludwig Maximilian University are spread across Munich, with a few buildings in Oberschleissheim and the suburbs of Garching, Maisach, Bad Tölz, while the main buildings of the university are grouped around Geschwister-Scholl-Platz and Professor-Huber-Platz on Ludwigstrasse, which leads to the side streets Akademiestraße, Schellingstraße and Veterinärstraße.

Although the university buildings are spread throughout the city of Munich, the main campus offers a wide range of transportation options. Campus life at Ludwig Maximilian University is very colorful, and there are often events organized for almost every field of study and activity in which students work and are interested. Ludwig Maximilian University has many societies in which students can participate, such as Humanitarian Groups, International Organizations, Student Council, Career-Oriented Student Groups.
