The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor is a research-oriented public university founded in 1817 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States of America. Founded before Michigan was a state, the University of Michigan is the oldest university in the State of Michigan and has been an institution of higher education since 1850, governed by a board of trustees, independent of Michigan state government. As one of the oldest research universities in the United States and a founding member of the Association of American Universities, the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor has long maintained its place in the top 50 in world university academic achievement rankings. The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, whose faculty members have been awarded a total of 26 Nobel Prizes, 6 Turing Prizes, 2 Abel Prizes and 2 Fields Medals, is also a member of institutions, organizations, initiatives and programs such as Universities Research Association, University Research Corridor, National Sea Grant College Program.
