The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor is a research-oriented public university founded in 1817 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States of America. Founded before Michigan was a state, the University of Michigan is the oldest university in the State of Michigan and has been an institution of higher education since 1850, governed by a board of trustees, independent of Michigan state government.
