Maynooth University overview

Maynooth University, officially the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, is a public university. It began operating in 1997 as one of the constituent universities of the National University of Ireland. University records list 1997 as the founding year, but the institution's history goes back to St Patrick's College, Maynooth, which opened in 1795. Maynooth is Ireland's smallest university, and also its fastest-growing. Its teaching is built broadly around departments in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

It also offers programs in education, computer science, electrical and electronic engineering, business, and law. The university is a member of the European University Association, the Irish Universities Association, and Universities Ireland. It works across two campuses in Maynooth — the North Campus and the South Campus — and today teaches more than 16,000 students.

Campus

Take a closer look at Maynooth University

Maynooth University's main campus lies along the main road between Maynooth and Kilcock, and it is divided into the North Campus and the South Campus. A pedestrian crossing on the Kilcock Road connects the two. The university library dates back to the opening of the college in 1795 and forms an important part of Maynooth University. It runs across two buildings, the John Paul II Library and the Russell Library. Together they hold more than 450,000 printed publications and over 42,000 electronic resources.

The South Campus is home to St Patrick's College and the university's administrative offices, as well as the vast majority of St Patrick's College's facilities. Departments such as Law, Mathematics, Music, Geography, Economics, and History carry out their academic work on the South Campus. The North Campus is newer than the South Campus. It houses the arts building, the bioscience and electronic engineering building, the Irish Film Institute, and production and design studios. The Faculty of Business and the Faculty of Education are also there.

Student accommodation on this campus takes the form of Courtyard Apartments, River Apartments, Rye Hall & Apartments, and Village Apartments. The student union center and the sports complex are on the North Campus as well. Maynooth is 25 kilometers from Dublin, Ireland's capital, and you can travel between the two cities by bus or train.

Campus Life

The university campuses sit in the heart of Maynooth. From there you can enjoy the social and cultural side of city life, as well as the amenities of the North and South Campuses.
