Trinity College Dublin (TCD), officially known as the University of Dublin, Trinity College, is Ireland's oldest and most prestigious university, founded in 1592 by royal charter of Queen Elizabeth I.

Modeled after the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Trinity was originally established to reinforce the Protestant Reformation in Ireland, and for many years Catholics were either prohibited or discouraged from attending.

Over time the university evolved into a more inclusive institution and became an important center of learning and research. Trinity's historic campus in the heart of Dublin blends 16th-century architecture with modern facilities and is recognized as a symbol of Ireland's intellectual and cultural life.

Trinity College Dublin has produced a large number of world-renowned academics, writers, and Nobel Prize laureates. Among its most famous alumni are Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels, the celebrated playwright and poet Oscar Wilde, and Samuel Beckett, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1969.

Trinity has also been a hub of scientific innovation, with significant contributions to fields such as nanotechnology, immunology, and neuroscience.

Trinity College Dublin, which has stood at the heart of Ireland's cultural and intellectual life since its founding in 1592, is located in the very center of Dublin.

Some of the buildings on the front square of the campus serve as reading rooms reserved for graduate students, while the square also contains the Old Library, the Examination Hall, the administrative building, the dining hall, and the famous campanile.

Trinity College Dublin has state-of-the-art learning and research facilities located outside the main campus. The Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute on Pearse Street brings innovative and interdisciplinary approaches together with new discoveries.

Students in departments such as Medicine, Immunology, Pharmacy, and Biochemistry spend much of their time at this institute. Trinity College Dublin has two main teaching hospitals: Tallaght Hospital and St. James's Hospital.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery is just a 2-minute walk from the main campus. Courses in departments such as Drama and Theatre Studies are held at the Lir National Academy of Dramatic Art on Grand Canal Quay.

Campus Life

Trinity College Dublin's Old Library, construction of which began alongside the university itself, is Ireland's largest library and holds a collection of more than six million printed books.

In addition, the university campus has numerous libraries designated for student study and research, including the Berkeley Library.

Trinity College Dublin is divided into three faculties — the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; the Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics and Science; and the Faculty of Health Sciences — and all of the university's academic centers are located on the main campus within walking distance of one another.

The university's oldest building, 'The Rubrics,' is today home to more than 120 student clubs and societies. Trinity College Dublin has more than 50 sports clubs, and its campus features a sports center with a 25-meter swimming pool, an 11-meter climbing wall, and fitness studios.

In addition, a wide variety of activities, workshops, and events that students can participate in throughout the year are organized at the many facilities on the university campus, including the Samuel Beckett Theatre.
