The university's oldest building dates back to 1837. While the university's buildings carry traces of history, they are in harmony with contemporary architecture. With its historic buildings and faculties, the university's main campus is located one mile south of the city center, adjacent to Victoria Park, Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College. The central building, known as Fielding Johnson Building, houses the university's administrative offices and the Leicester Law School.

- During World War I, the buildings were used as a military hospital.
- College House was the childhood home of David and Richard Attenborough.
- The Adrian Building is the site where Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys discovered genetic fingerprinting in 1984.
