Campus

Take a closer look at The University of Sheffield

The University of Sheffield campus consists of the Western Bank and St George campuses, divided by Upper Hannover Street. Although the University of Sheffield is not a traditional campus university in the strict sense, the vast majority of its 430 affiliated buildings are located in close proximity to one another.

Since receiving its royal charter and attaining university status, the university has expanded from two academic focal points roughly 1 km apart — Firth Court on the Western Bank side and the Sir Frederick Mappin Building on the St George side — rather than growing outward from a single central hub.

The Western Bank Campus — also known as the Main Campus — is only 1.60 km from Sheffield city center.

The Western Bank Campus is home to landmark buildings including the famous Firth Court, Arts Tower, Bartolome House, the Medical School, the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the Children's Hospital, the Western Park Museum, the Western Bank Library, the University of Sheffield's sports facilities, the Alfred Denny Building, the Sheffield Institute of Translational Neuroscience, and the Hicks Building. The St George Campus, meanwhile, houses the Kroto Research Institute, the St George's Amphitheatre, the Jessop Building, the Ella Armitage Building, the Portobello Centre, and Regent Court.

Transportation between the two campuses is served by a dense road network, and a supertram line runs frequent services between the St George Campus and the city center.

Campus Life

The University of Sheffield's Western Bank and St George campuses are located right in the heart of Sheffield, with virtually everything students could need within walking distance.

Multiple libraries across both campuses provide students with spacious study areas and research resources. Near Weston Park, the Goodwin Sports Centre — equipped with a 33-meter swimming pool, a climbing wall, tennis courts, cricket pitches, gymnasiums, and numerous synthetic pitches — is available for students to use for sports and fitness.

Student housing is available in three locations: Ranmoor and Endcliffe Villages, and the City. On the university's campuses, students can also find the University of Sheffield Students' Union — widely regarded as one of the best students' unions in the UK — 350 student clubs and societies, concert and performance venues, shops for student shopping, and a variety of restaurants, cafes, pubs, and bars such as 'Proove', 'Leopold Square', 'Falafel King', 'Kommune', and 'China Red'.

The University of Sheffield Students' Union operates its own bar, cafe, and restaurant, run by students of the university.
