University of Cagliari overview

The University of Cagliari is a research-focused public university that began in 1606 in the city of Cagliari, in Italy's autonomous region of Sardinia. It is one of the oldest educational institutions in Italy. King Philip III of Spain founded it as a center for advanced education on the island of Sardinia. The island was under Spanish control at the time. It was modeled on the leading European higher education institutions of the era, and its first curriculum covered law, theology, philosophy, and medicine.

Those fields met the needs of administrative, religious, and medical professionals. Its seventeenth-century roots laid the groundwork for a center of intellectual life. The university made significant contributions to the cultural and academic environment of Sardinia. Over its history it reached various milestones by widening its academic scope and research facilities. In recent years it has drawn on its Mediterranean location to take a leading position in various scientific fields. These include engineering, environmental studies, and information technology.

The university has produced important historical figures such as the Italian philosopher Giovanni Battista Tuveri. He is known for his contributions to liberal thought in the nineteenth century.
