University of Trieste
University of Trieste overview
The University of Trieste is a research-oriented public university founded in 1924 in Trieste, Italy. It was set up to meet the region's higher education needs. The university became part of an effort to support education and intellectual development in northeastern Italy. This mattered in particular after World War I, when Trieste became part of Italy. The city's strategic position as a multicultural hub, near the borders of Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia, also played a role in its founding.
The university initially offered courses in economics, a field of vital importance to Trieste as a major commercial and port city. Over the years the university expanded into other disciplines, developing faculties in engineering, science, medicine, and the humanities.
