University of Bath
University of Bath overview
The University of Bath was officially founded in 1966 by Royal Charter, and it traces its roots to the Bristol Trade School, established in 1856. That school later became the Merchant Venturers' Technical College in 1885. The institution wanted university status, and more space than Bristol had available. It planned a new campus on Claverton Down, overlooking the city of Bath.
Construction began in 1964, the first buildings were completed in 1965, and the university received its charter the following year. Today the University of Bath is recognized as one of the United Kingdom's leading universities. It ranks consistently near the top of the national league tables for overall performance, student satisfaction, and graduate prospects. It excels across a range of disciplines, particularly engineering (chemical, mechanical, electrical, civil), physical sciences, mathematics, architecture, management, and social sciences.
The university is renowned for its strong research profile, its strong performance in national research assessments such as the Research Excellence Framework (REF), and its close ties with industry and commerce.

The main campus is at Claverton Down, about 2.4 km from the center of Bath. The site is compact, and you can walk from one end to the other in 15 minutes. Pedestrian and vehicle traffic are separated by a single floor level. The pedestrian-only section, known as the 'Parade,' is a central street raised above ground level. At the heart of the campus stands the university library, open 24 hours. It supports you with computing services, information retrieval, and research, and it holds books and academic publications.
The Sports Training Village takes up much of the eastern wing of the campus. Built in 1992, it was expanded during a renovation project in 2003. Student accommodation surrounds the northern part of the campus. It includes Brendon Court, Eastwood, Marlborough Court, Solsbury Court, Norwood House, Osborne House, Polden Court, The Quads, Westwood, and Woodland Court.
Around the campus area known as the 'Parade' you will find restaurants, pubs, fast-food outlets, and cafes. The same area has two banks, a student union shop, two small supermarkets, and academic blocks. The National Union of Students ranks the University of Bath Students' Union among the top three student unions in the entire United Kingdom. The university's more than 100 student clubs and societies bring together enthusiasts of virtually every interest.
