University College London (UCL)
University College London (UCL) was founded in 1826 as the " London University" by Henry Brougham, James Mill and the poet Thomas Campbell, inspired by the ideas of the philosopher Jeremy Bentham. Henry Brougham, James Mill and Thomas Campbell aimed to create a secular university open to all, regardless of religious or social background, in contrast to the various restrictions imposed by Oxford and Cambridge Universities at the time. University College London was the first university to admit students regardless of their religion and the first to admit male and female students on equal terms, and played a crucial role in the formation of disciplines such as English, geography and experimental psychology in Britain. Following the Second World War, University College London underwent a period of remarkable growth with new buildings, new faculties and a significant increase in student numbers. In 2014, it merged with the Institute of Education and strengthened its research activities in the social sciences and educational sciences. Today, UCL is consistently ranked at the top of world university rankings and is recognized for research excellence in fields as diverse as medicine, life sciences, physics, law, engineering, the arts and the humanities.
