The University of Sussex is a research-focused public university. It began in 1959 as University College of Sussex, in the village of Falmer in East Sussex, England. It was raised to university status by royal charter in 1961. The university is young compared with its peers. Even so, its graduates and faculty have been honored with 5 Nobel Prizes and 1 Crafoord Prize. They have also received 1 Pulitzer Prize, 2 BAFTA Awards, and 1 Emmy Award. Their awards also include 15 Fellow of the Royal Society Awards and 10 Fellow of the British Academy Awards.

There are 24 Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences Awards as well. Sussex is a member of organizations, bodies, initiatives, and programs such as Universities UK and British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS). Its memberships also include South-East Physics Network (Sepnet) and South-East Network for Social Sciences (SeNSS). It belongs as well to the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB). The university offers higher education opportunities to about 18,000 students.

How to get into University of Sussex

The University of Sussex runs preparation programs called "International Foundation Year". They prepare students who are about to begin university studies for higher education, and help them develop English language proficiency.

In addition, to apply to the undergraduate programs offered by the University of Sussex, you must meet the following conditions.

  • 4-Year High School Diploma (High GPA) + 5 Advanced Placement (AP) courses
    or
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) or A-Level Diploma
    or
  • Completion of one year of study at a university recognized by the University of Sussex that offers a 4-year bachelor's degree program in Turkey
  • English Proficiency Certificate (a certificate earned with scores from English proficiency exams such as IELTS, TOEFL i-BT, or PTE)

A-Level grades accepted by the University of Sussex generally fall between ABB and BBB. Accepted grades vary by department, so it is best to review the relevant admission requirements once you have decided on your department.

Campus

Take a closer look at University of Sussex

The University of Sussex is in Falmer, near the city of Brighton, about 1 hour from London. The major international airports at Gatwick and Heathrow are both within easy reach. Much of the campus falls within the boundaries of the city of Brighton and Hove, and part of it extends eastward to Lewes. South Downs National Park surrounds the campus, which sits 5.5 kilometers from Brighton city center. The University of Sussex is the only British university located within a national park.

Campus Life

The University of Sussex offers a range of housing options, on campus and off. Off-campus student houses and residences sit close to the campus. On campus there are 11 cafes, pubs, and restaurants that serve the university's students only. Weekly markets are also held on campus, where students can try English street food and shop for clothing and books. The campus has a supermarket, a post office, a bank, and a health center too. Two sports centers on campus let students take part in many different sports.

More than 230 student societies, clubs, and sports teams operate within the university for students to join.
