Founded in 1965 in New South Wales, the University of Newcastle is a public university offering instruction across its Callaghan, Newcastle CBD, Ourimbah, Port Macquarie, Singapore, and Sydney CBD campuses.

Ranked among the top 1,000 universities in the world, the university offers more than 100 undergraduate and 80 postgraduate programs, as well as more than 450 certificate and short-course programs. Home to more than 37,000 students and more than 2,600 staff, the University of Newcastle has embraced an equity-focused approach to education, undertaking significant efforts to ensure that women, Australian Indigenous peoples, and other minority groups can access quality education under favorable conditions.

Sustainability is another area of strong commitment for the university. In line with this, as of January 2020, 100% renewable electricity has been in use across all university campuses as part of efforts to transition to renewable energy sources and reduce carbon emissions.

To reduce plastic waste, the university partnered with an external organization in 2018 to launch a recycling initiative, through which 115,000 pieces of plastic were recycled over the course of the program.

In addition, numerous sustainability projects have been put into action, including measures to regulate and reduce water usage, the creation of ecological conservation areas to increase biodiversity, the addition of on-campus shuttle services to reduce car usage, and many more.

Campus

Take a closer look at The University of Newcastle, Australia

The university has a total of 5 campuses: Newcastle (Callaghan and City), Central Coast (Ourimbah), Port Macquarie, Singapore, and Sydney CBD. The Newcastle Callaghan campus is the largest of these and serves as the main campus.

Many of the university's buildings — including student services, the teaching and learning department, most faculties, the Auchmuty and Huxley libraries, sports fields, a swimming and diving center, 5 residence halls, and the Newcastle Business School — are all located within the Newcastle Callaghan campus, which spans a 140-hectare wooded area.

The Ourimbah campus offers a total of 16 undergraduate and 1 postgraduate program across health, science, business, law, arts, and education. The University of Newcastle also shares the Ourimbah campus with TAFE NSW (Hunter Institute) and Central Coast Community College.

The Port Macquarie campus offers 3 undergraduate programs and the Open Foundation program. The Singapore campus is the university's first overseas campus, offering undergraduate programs in Business and Commerce as well as a postgraduate Business program.

The Sydney campus offers postgraduate programs in Business and Law, along with English and Foundation programs.
