Deakin University is a research-focused public university established in 1974 by the Deakin University Act, located in Victoria, Australia. Named after Alfred Deakin — Australia's second prime minister and a key figure in the country's federation — the university was founded through the merger of the higher education programs of the Victoria State College, Geelong, and the Gordon Institute of Technology. Its first campus, at Waurn Ponds near Geelong, admitted its inaugural students in 1977. Over the years Deakin expanded by absorbing the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education in 1990 and most of Victoria College in 1991, establishing campuses in Melbourne's Burwood suburb, at Geelong Waterfront, and in Warrnambool. The university has played a pioneering role in distance education and has continually embraced technological advances to enhance learning experiences. It operates four main campuses: Melbourne Burwood, Geelong Waurn Ponds, Geelong Waterfront, and Warrnambool. Renowned for its innovative approach to digital education, Deakin University also offers a comprehensive Cloud Campus that serves a large portion of its student community. Deakin University operates several campuses across Victoria, Australia, each serving distinct purposes and offering a variety of facilities. The Melbourne Burwood Campus, Deakin's largest, is located approximately 30 minutes from Melbourne's central business district. The Melbourne campus features modern architecture and is surrounded by parks, offering students a vibrant urban environment.
