Named after Alfred Deakin — Australia's second prime minister and a key figure in the country's federation — the university was founded through the merger of the higher education programs of the Victoria State College, Geelong, and the Gordon Institute of Technology. Its first campus, at Waurn Ponds near Geelong, admitted its inaugural students in 1977.
Over the years Deakin expanded by absorbing the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education in 1990 and most of Victoria College in 1991, establishing campuses in Melbourne's Burwood suburb, at Geelong Waterfront, and in Warrnambool.
