Utrecht University (UU) has several campuses spread across the city of Utrecht, each with its own distinct character and academic focus. The main campus, Utrecht Science Park (De Uithof), is located on the eastern outskirts of the city and serves as the university's largest and most modern center.
This campus houses the Faculties of Science, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Geosciences, as well as state-of-the-art research facilities such as the Hubrecht Institute for biomedical research and the Princess Máxima Centre for pediatric oncology. Utrecht Science Park is also home to the University Medical Centre Utrecht (UMC Utrecht), one of the Netherlands' leading hospitals and research centers.
The campus also features student dormitories, sports facilities, and the Botanical Gardens, one of the oldest university gardens in the country. In addition to Utrecht Science Park, the university maintains historic campuses in the city center that house the faculties of humanities, social sciences, law, and economics.
The most well-known of these is Drift — a collection of 17th-century buildings where many humanities students attend classes and lectures. The University Library at Drift is an important academic resource offering extensive collections and study spaces in a historic setting. Another notable location is Janskerkhof, home to Utrecht's law faculty and situated near the famous Dom Tower.
The university is home to a wide variety of student organizations, study associations, and social clubs catering to a broad range of interests. Utrechtse Studenten Vereniging (USV) is one of the oldest student associations, offering networking, social events, and academic support.
There are also faculty-specific organizations such as SIB-Utrecht, which focuses on international relations and politics, and Vidius, which advocates for student rights. International students can connect with ESN Utrecht (Erasmus Student Network), which organizes city tours, cultural exchanges, and social gatherings to help newcomers integrate into Dutch student life.
The university also has a strong entrepreneurial environment, with organizations such as UtrechtInc — a startup incubator that supports student-led businesses and innovation projects. Sports and traditions play an important role in student life at Utrecht University. The Olympos Sports Centre, located at Utrecht Science Park, offers more than 70 sports including soccer, tennis, rowing, and martial arts, and serves as a key hub for athletic activities.
The Utrecht Student Rowing Club Orca is one of the largest rowing clubs in the Netherlands and frequently competes in national and international tournaments. Among the most beloved traditions is Utrecht Introduction Time (UIT) — an annual orientation week during which new students explore the city, meet fellow students, and take part in a variety of fun activities. Other major events include King's Day celebrations, during which students join nationwide festivities, and Culture Night, during which university buildings are transformed into venues for music, theater, and art performances.
