Wageningen University & Research overview
Wageningen University & Research (WUR), located in Wageningen, the Netherlands, traces its roots back to its founding in 1876 as the Rijkslandbouwschool (National Agricultural College). Having attained academic status under the names Hoogere Land- en Boschbouwschool (College of Agriculture and Forestry) in 1896, Rijks Hoogere Land-, Tuin- en Boschbouwschool (National College of Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry) in 1904, and Rijks Landbouw Hoogeschool (National Agricultural College) in 1918, the institution was renamed Wageningen Agricultural University in 1986 and, following a merger with several research institutes in 2000, became what is today known as Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR). WUR is recognized worldwide for its contributions to the life sciences, agriculture, and environmental research.
About Wageningen University & Research
Founded in 1918, Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is a globally unique hub for education and research that consistently ranks among the best in the world in agriculture, food production, environmental sciences, and life sciences. What sets it apart from other institutions is the fully integrated structure in which the university and government-funded specialized research institutes operate under a single roof.
Located in the heart of the Netherlands, in a region known as "Food Valley" — the Silicon Valley of agri-food technology — WUR is home to projects that directly shape the future of our planet. As a university that sets global standards in areas such as Sustainable Agriculture, Food Technology, Climate Studies, Biotechnology, and Environmental Management, it places the mission of "Healthy Food and Living Environment" at the core of its entire curriculum.
With a teaching approach built entirely on problem-based learning and hands-on field experience, students at WUR have the unique opportunity to receive an education side by side with the R&D centers of global giants like Unilever and FrieslandCampina, which are located on or near the campus.
Offering a modern, eco-friendly campus life embedded in nature, Wageningen University & Research cultivates not just an academic degree, but the next generation of leading scientists who will develop solutions to the world's greatest global challenges — from the climate crisis to hunger and sustainability.
