Delft University Technology (TU Delft) is in Delft, the Netherlands, and is the oldest and largest technical university in the country. In 2023 it was among the top 10 engineering and technology universities in the world, ranked 2nd in civil engineering, 3rd in mechanical, aerospace and aeronautical engineering and 3rd in architecture. The university began in 1842, when King William II founded it as a royal academy. It widened its research and education curriculum over time, becoming a polytechnic school in 1864 and a full institute of technology in 1905.
The name was changed to Delft University Technology in 1986. TU Delft is associated with Nobel Prize-winning Dutch scientists such as Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes and Simon van der Meer. It is a member of many university federations, such as the IDEA League, CESAER, UNITECH International, ENHANCE Alliance, LDE and 4TU.
